Island Insights
  • Electrical Outlets: US/Canada Travelers do not need a power adapter (plugs are identical) nor do you need a voltage converter. Travelers from the EU will need a power adapter for Type A and Type B sockets and may need a voltage converter (Mexico uses 127 volts and a frequency of 60 hertz)
  • Currency: In highly touristic areas like the Riviera Maya, USD is often accepted. However, you should have some pesos in small bills for tipping.
  • Language: English is widely spoken in hotels, resorts, and major attractions, but attempting Spanish phrases shows respect and is warmly received.
  • Drinking Water: While it is not safe to drink the tap water, you'll have plenty of access to safe, purified water throughout your stay at UNICO 20°87°. The resort takes care to provide bottled water in rooms and ensures that water served in restaurants comes from purified sources. As with any resort in the Riviera Maya area, you should avoid drinking directly from the tap, but the resort makes it very easy to stay hydrated with safe water options everywhere on the property. When you leave the resort, be sure to take bottled water with you.
  • Safety & Security: Take care, just as you would in your day-to-day life. Lock your valuables, ID, and wallet in the hotel room safe when you don’t need them. Be aware of your environment. Locals and others will be on the beaches or in town soliciting their services for purchase. Use licensed and regulated services provided only by the hotel or the event staff vendor list, including for activities and transportation.
  • Emergency Contacts: In case of emergencies, dial 911.
  • Taxi Services: Local taxi services are available and can be arranged through the resort concierge. Have the hotel call a taxi for you when possible—they can help negotiate fair prices. Always confirm the fare before departing; rates are typically predetermined. Taxis don't use meters; always agree on the price before getting in. Tipping isn't required but rounding up is appreciated.
  • Service Charge: The service charge at a restaurant is shared among servers and kitchen staff.  If there is a service charge, a tip is not obligatory, but a token amount left for excellent service is greatly appreciated. If there is no service charge, a 15% tip is appropriate.
Cultural & Environment
  • Culture: Guests can find touches of Maya culture woven into daily life—handcrafted goods, traditional ingredients like cacao and honey, ancient spa rituals, and celebrations connected to the Maya calendar.
  • Environmental Consciousness & Reef-Safe Sunscreen: Use biodegradable and reef-friendly sunscreen to protect the marine ecosystem. The sun is strongest from 11:00am – 3:00pm. Please be sure to reapply sunscreen often and drink plenty of liquids. Sunglasses sunscreen, a hat/cap are highly recommended. Don't touch coral, sea turtles, or wildlife in cenotes and don’t remove shells, rocks, or artifacts from beaches or sites.
  • Staying Hydrated: The tropical climate requires staying well-hydrated, especially during outdoor activities. Remember to always have bottled water with you when you leave the resort; the tap water is not safe to drink.
